We have been soaking up the final days of our summer vacation. And even though I am slightly sad to see summer end, I am eagerly awaiting fall. To get my kids excited about fall (and back-to-school), I put together this apple cloud dough activity bin for them to play with over the weekend. Cloud dough is an awesome sensory activity for toddlers & preschoolers. It’s a great boredom buster and is quick to make, too! And the best part about it? It actually smells like apple pie! Spoiler alert: it’s messy but loads of fun!
A plastic tub
8 cups of flour
1 cup of vegetable/canola oil
4-5 pieces of red sidewalk chalk (to crush the chalk you’ll need a Ziploc bag + hammer)
Apple pie spice (or cinnamon)
Start by pouring the flour and oil into your designated plastic tub/container. Knead the flour and oil together. Next, crush your sidewalk chalk pieces by placing them into a Ziploc bag and then crushing with a hammer. You’ll want your chalk to be the consistency of powder, so it may take a few minutes to thoroughly crush all of your chalk. This step is best done outside.
Next, pour your crushed chalk into the flour + oil mixture. Mix together. This will give your cloud dough the bright red apple color you are looking for! To give your cloud dough a pleasant apple scent, mix in a generous amount of apple pie spice. If you don’t have any apple pie spice on hand, cinnamon will work just as well. Lastly, add your sensory bin items + tools, and you’re ready to play!
Since the kids will be headed off to preschool next week, I decided to put a back-to-school spin on our apple cloud dough. I added in some school themed items like magnetic letters, an apple shaped cookie cutter, and a school bus. I also threw in some silicone baking cups and green pipe cleaner so the kids could make their own little apples!
This was our first time making/playing with cloud dough, and both kids absolutely loved it! Noah spent the majority of the afternoon playing with it while his little sister napped. She was a little cautious of the cloud dough at first, but once she warmed up to it, she was all about it!
If you’ve never played with cloud dough before, I highly recommend giving it a try! The consistency has a very silky texture to it, which makes it completely irresistible for their little hands! Mom tip: due to the mess that cloud dough can create, this activity is one that is best enjoyed outside (or inside on a large towel/sheet).
Have you tried cloud dough with your kids yet?
Let’s be friends!
