Art Class at Home: Painted Flower Pots

Happy Spring, y’all! I’m not sure what the weather is like near you, but I hope the sun is shining and that temps are beginning to warm up. Wherever you may live, I think we can all agree that it’s time to officially say goodbye to winter and hello to a brand new season!

It was announced yesterday that schools here in South Carolina are now closed through April 30th. While Noah’s school has been wonderful in providing him with many great distance learning resources, I’ve been brainstorming other ways to keep the kids occupied during our days at home. One of the ways we’ve been keeping busy is through craft/art classes at home. To keep things even more fun, we bring our craft table out on our front porch and hold art class outside!

Each day I aim for one art related activity. And before you get stressed about the thought of planning art activities at home, let me just say this – I aim for simple activities! Nothing overly complicated or fancy. Especially right now. The other day we went on a scavenger hunt in our yard and collected various rocks. We then decided to paint those rocks. Easy, right?! Spoiler alert: there is essentially zero prep for mom and you’d be surprised at just how much kids love to paint rocks!

With spring’s arrival last week, I knew I wanted to do something to celebrate it, but I wasn’t quite sure what exactly. So, when our local garden center posted on their Facebook page that they were offering flower planting kits for kids, I was so excited! I knew we could turn them into the perfect spring craft while supporting a local business. Win, win!

Supplies Needed
  • Flowers or seeds
  • Flower pot or upcycled flower vase (think: mason jars or tin cans)
  • Potting soil
  • Craft Paint + Brushes

I know these are very unusual circumstances right now, so get creative and do your best to use what you already have on hand at home. Or if you’re able, shop local and support a small business!

How-To

If the weather allows, take your gardening + craft supplies outside and enjoy the fresh air + Vitamin D! We covered our art table with some Kraft paper to make clean-up easier, but that’s totally optional.

I let my kids paint their flower pots however they wanted to. Noah chose to paint a garden scene on his pot while London insisted on mixing the colors together telling me “Mommy, this is how real artists paint”.

Tip: Have your kids paint their flower pots first – before planting.

After they’ve dried for awhile, it’s time to get your hands dirty and plant your flowers! Our flower kits came with pre-portioned potting soil, but don’t be afraid to let your kids get messy and scoop the soil themselves. They say dirt boosts the immune system, right?! 😉

Add sunshine + water and you’re all finished! Don’t forget to add your painted rocks for another fun pop of color!

I think it’s safe to say that art class at home was a hit! Our painted flower pots were such a simple, yet engaging activity that my kids seemed to really enjoy. And honestly, so did I.

Friends, this season of life isn’t meant for over-the-top Pinterest worthy crafts or color coded hour-by-hour schedules. Keep it simple, and little by little routine will come.
