Back-to-School Breakfast Tradition

The back to school countdown is officially on! 4 weeks from today and I will have a 2nd grader & a Kindergartner. All the feels AND emotions. In my effort to make this school year feel as “normal” as possible, we are still planning our usual back to school traditions and that includes our 1st day of school breakfast! We always do something extra yummy (& healthy!) for breakfast complete with balloons and special plates & napkins.

This year I decided to get crafty and add in a few DIY details to our back-to-school breakfast set up. I turned basic brown paper bags into ruler themed snack bags and made silverware bags from notebook paper. I also took red paper plates and quickly transformed them into apple plates with some construction paper + glue. Read on for the how-to on these easy peasy school themed crafts.

Supplies Needed
  • Red Paper Plates (or a basic paper plate + red paint)
  • Construction Paper (green & brown)
  • Brown Paper Bags
  • Notebook Paper
  • Name Tags and/or Chalkboard Labels
  • Red Twine
  • Black Sharpie Marker
  • Scissors
  • Craft Glue and/or Glue Stick
  • School Themed Stickers (optional)
  • School Themed Decor and/or Balloons (optional)

How-To
  • Brown Paper Ruler Snack Bags – First, cut your paper bag down to size depending upon how large you want your snack bag (I cut mine in half). Next, take a ruler and a black Sharpie to make your ruler markings. Lastly, fill with your child’s favorite snack(s) and toss it in their backpack for an afternoon treat!
  • Apple Plates – Start with a basic red paper plate. Cut out a stem + leaf from your construction paper. Then glue to the back of your plate. Easy peasy!
  • Notebook Paper Silverware Bags – Start by tearing out a sheet of good ole’ notebook paper. Fold into fours and then glue the open ends together (leaving the top open for the silverware). Add a cute little name tag/chalkboard label and tie with a piece of red twine. Slide your silverware in and you now have the cutest back-to-school themed silverware bags! Bonus tip: set out a sheet of school themed stickers and let them decorate their bags!

Add a few school themed decorations and a back-to-school balloon or two and you’re all set! Your back-to-school breakfast doesn’t have to be anything over-the-top or complicated. You could also surprise your kiddos with new school supplies by filling your DIY notebook paper bags with crayons or markers. It really is the little things that mean the most. I know this upcoming school year brings with it a wide range of emotions and uncertainty; however, it’s totally possible to find small ways to make this school year one of the most memorable ones yet!

Tip: Prep everything the night before! If your school mornings are a bit too chaotic for a full breakfast (trust me, I get it!) you can always opt for a special 1st day of school dinner or themed after-school snack!
