How to Set Up a Morning Basket
“School’s out for summer”! Sing it with me, y’all! My oldest is officially a Kindergarten graduate and my youngest just wrapped up another year of preschool. Summer is finally here! Lazy pool days, s’mores by the fire, beach vacations, and let’s not forget – no alarms to set & no lunches to pack! Can I get an AMEN?!
But with summer fun often comes lack of routine & structure – two things this mama (and her kiddos) crave. So, this summer I am determined to set aside some structured learning time every morning. Okay, maybe not every morning – because let’s be real – life happens and I need to be realistic. But in between our summer camps & scheduled activities, we’ll be squeezing in some dedicated learning time. And one way we plan to do this in our home is with a morning basket.
What is a morning basket?
A morning basket is simply a basket filled with books, activities or crafts that you and your child can work with on a daily basis. Your morning basket can be curriculum based, have a specific theme that changes daily/weekly or just simply be a basket filled with various art supplies that allow your children to create & explore with. These activities can be done independently by your child or together with you.
While we have always worked on academics at home, the specific use of a morning basket is a new concept in our house. Normally I am just squeezing it in when/where I can, but my hope with this basket is to make their learning at home more intentional. We are starting things off with a simple basket full of art supplies and hands-on activities for the kids to work on independently following breakfast.
What should I include in a morning basket?
Here’s a look at what’s inside our current morning basket, including a list of some additional art supplies you’ll want to have on hand this summer:
- Workbooks (math, letters, etc…) – including wipe clean books
- Dry erase markers
- Construction + drawing paper
- Flash cards
- Dot markers
- Colored pencils + crayons + markers
- Kid scissors
- Glue sticks
- Beads, buttons & pom poms – great for sorting & counting
- Colored popsicle sticks – I attached Velcro stickers on the ends for the kids to create shapes, letters & objects
- Felt shape lacing activity – found in the Target One Spot (great for practicing fine motor skills)
I also plan to include puzzles, books & themed activities as part of our morning basket, which will be changed out weekly. Our first themed basket is going to be all about numbers & telling time, which I will share with you soon!
I’m excited to begin this new summer activity at home with my kids & of course, YOU!
Have you implemented a morning basket into your summer routine? What are some of your favorite themes/activities to include in your basket?
xo,
Sumer

These are really great ideas for a morning basket, which is a new concept to me. I’ve been looking for ways to prevent the summer slump in my school-aged kids, so we will definitely be giving your morning basket ideas a try!

What a great idea! I can’t believe I haven’t thought of this. I am a teacher and we are still working but as soon as my summer break starts I will be implementing a morning basket. My kids will love this so much.

What a great idea! My toddler gets up before me in the mornings and having activities and art supplies set out for her would really help keep her busy without screen time (yay!). Dot markers are a go-to activity in our house, smart to include them in your morning baskets.

Oh we are huge Dot marker fans in our house, too! They’re an absolute must to always have around!

I love this idea. I homeschool so I need something to help my kid get started in the morning why I get organized. I cannot wait to make my own morning basket.

This would be perfect then! 🙂
