How to Make a LEGO Table
Last week my oldest turned FIVE (all the feels)! And as many five year olds are, he is completely LEGO obsessed. If your house is anything like mine, then you likely have a zillion tiny LEGO pieces scattered allllll over the place. My son carries his LEGOS with him everywhere. He also sits down to build them anywhere. This means at the breakfast table, in the playroom, in his bedroom, and even in the car. This drives my type A personality just a tad bit crazy! I was originally at a loss as to what to get him for his 5th birthday, when all of a sudden it hit me – a LEGO table! Not only was this something I knew he’d absolutely love, but it was also a solution to the never ending LEGO maze around the house. Because this was such a much needed item in our house, I wanted to share how we made our LEGO table in the hopes of helping other LEGO loving families!
There are a number of ways to make your own LEGO table. My original plan was to use the IKEA TROFAST storage system, as I have seen in many LEGO table tutorials. However, after thinking about it a bit more, I decided to change up my plan and choose a coffee table as the base for our LEGO table. Personally, I like this better for two reasons – 1) it’s lower to the ground so my kids can either kneel at the table or use a small stool to sit (instead of standing) and 2) it is lighter in weight, which offers the ability to move it from room to room, if needed. We used the LACK coffee table from IKEA; however any small coffee table will work!
Supplies Needed
- Small/medium sized coffee table
- LEGO baseplates in any color(s)
- Razor blade (if you need to cut/resize any of your LEGO base plates)
- Measuring tape
- Removable Mounting Putty or Squares
- Storage bins or containers
- Stool or small chair (optional)
How-To
Start by assembling your table. Next, lay out your LEGO baseplates to determine how everything will look. We opted for all of the plates to be the same color, but you can also mix and match colors to create patterns. Side note: you can purchase LEGO baseplates pretty much anywhere LEGOS are sold. We purchased ours from Amazon.
For our specific table, we needed (7) 10×10″ baseplates to fill the table (with a small white border around the edge). 6 of the baseplates fit perfectly as-is, while the 7th plate on the end needed to be cut into two pieces. After measuring, my husband used a razor blade to cut the last baseplate down to size. This took him some time, but it allowed for a very precise cut. Due to the thinness of the baseplates, we do not recommend using a saw to cut them.
Once you have everything measured and cut down to size, you can begin mounting your baseplates to the table. We opted to use removable mounting putty. This was super easy to do. Not only does this keep them firmly in place (while staying flush with the table), it also gives us the freedom to change out the baseplates, if we ever wanted to do so. If you are looking for something more permanent, you could also use Gorilla glue.
Next, it’s time to sort/organize your LEGO pieces. I found these containers at Target and they were just what I was looking for! [Update January 2020: unfortunately, these exact storage containers are no longer available; however, any short storage container with a lid will work. I’ve linked a few comparable options here and here] If you need even more LEGO storage, you could also add another set of containers below the table.
I also decided to add a small stool (MAMMUT Children’s Stool from IKEA) for Noah to sit on as he plays. This is totally optional, but I think it does make it more comfy for him.
We surprised Noah with his new LEGO table the morning of his 5th birthday, and he hasn’t left it since!
Finally, a place for him to build with his LEGOS and a place to store them all! Win, win!
Are your kids LEGO obsessed too? Have you made a LEGO table?

I’ve been looking for something like this! My son is into legos right now and although he only has a few very small sets, the pieces are already all over the house! I need to establish a permanent solution too.
Sumer
Isn’t it amazing how FAST the LEGOS can take over your house?! This has been such a life-saver for us, and we’ve only had it for a few days!!

This is such a great idea! My little isn’t quite big enough for legos yet but he’s starting to stack blocks and things so I’m thinking he will be quite the builder some day! I’ll have to keep this in mind!

I love this idea! We have LEGOS scattered all over my kids’ playroom. Your table idea is such a fun way to organize them, but still have lots of room to play. Plus – fewer Legos for me to step on!
Angie
What a cute idea! My kids would love this. I have my suspicion that the legos would still be all over the floor, and not in the bins, but I love this idea!
Jenny
Great Idea and easy to create. I was just thinking my son needed this after I have repeatedly stepped on & cleaned up his legos. Those small ones are so small.

I love this idea! I’ve been searching for a lego table for my son’s room that isn’t so large it overtakes the space. This would fit great. Thanks for sharing!
