Nature Walk Scavenger Hunt

This past weekend we tossed our “to-do” list to the side and just enjoyed playing outside soaking up the gorgeous spring weather. My oldest has been begging to take his new Outdoor Book outside, so we grabbed his book and headed out for a nature walk.

Earlier last week I actually stumbled upon this cute little scavenger hunt bag in the OneSpot at Target and knew my son would love it! Looking back, I’m so glad I snagged this because it sure came in handy on our walk. With our Outdoor Book + bag in hand, we turned our nature walk into a fun scavenger hunt!

We are truly blessed to live in a neighborhood that has so much to offer, including walking trails throughout the woods and a beautiful river as a backdrop. All of this is right in our backyard for us to explore, so it was about time we got out and did just that!

No matter where you live, I encourage you to get outside and explore! You never know what you will discover when you take the time to actually look for little hidden treasures.

When we checked off one of the items on our scavenger hunt bag, we would then open our handy Outdoor Book to learn more about it. We had fun collecting different shaped leaves and learning all about the trees that each leaf came from.

Things to look for on your nature walk:

  • Plants – leaves, flowers, buds, etc…
  • Insects/insect homes – butterflies, ladybugs, & spiderwebs
  • Birds – including nests & feathers
  • Animal tracks
  • Seeds & nuts – pinecones, acorns, etc…
  • Cloud spotting – don’t forget to look up at the sky!

Take a scavenger hunt list with you and make it a game to see how many items you can find!

London was so excited to find her own pinecone! I mean, it’s the little things, right?! 😉 Another item checked off our scavenger hunt list!

My little reader loved stopping along the way to open his book and read about everything we saw. I love that our simple walk around the neighborhood turned into so many teachable lessons – outside of his Kindergarten classroom.

Tip: Take your time on your nature walk. Take breaks and encourage your children to lead the way so that they can find what interests them.

At the end of our walk, the kids loved emptying their bag and seeing everything they found along the trails. Not pictured: a handful of smashed flowers, more sticks & a golf ball.

We thoroughly enjoyed getting out and exploring together as a family, especially now that spring has sprung! I hope this post inspires you to do the same with your kids and see what adventures you can find together. We plan to do another nature walk in the summer and again in the fall, as each season brings with it new little treasures to find.

xo,

Sumer
