Toy Story Inspired Rocketship Craft

3, 2, 1…Liftoff!

Today I am bringing you a fun Toy Story inspired craft that will finally give you a reason to use all of those empty TP rolls your kids have been collecting during quarantine. Or is that just my kids?! 😉 Anyways, before we get started I thought I would share a little backstory as to how we came up with this project…

What an incredible moment it was getting to watch the SpaceX launch live on TV a few weeks ago! It was even better getting to share this moment in history with Noah & London. They both had so many questions & were in complete awe of watching that rocket blast up into the sky!

After the launch, the kids & I decided to make our own rocketships inspired by everyone’s favorite space ranger…Buzz Lightyear!

But the fun didn’t stop there. We just couldn’t get enough of our cute little Buzz themed rockets, so we made some friends to take the ride up to space with him. Even though Woody is now happily traveling the world with Bo, I like to think that he and Buzz still get to see each other from time to time. After all, friends stick together, right?!

Supplies Needed
  • Empty Toilet Paper Rolls
  • Craft Paint + Brushes
  • Construction Paper and/or Card Stock
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Double-sided tape
  • Craft Glue and/or Glue Gun
  • Aluminum Foil (optional)
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Star Stickers (optional)
How-To

I know that supply list may look a bit lengthy, but chances are you likely already have everything on hand you need to make these Toy Story rockets. So, let’s get started!

First, you’ll want to decide which Toy Story characters you want to transform into rocketships. Will you choose to recreate our versions or make your own? Get creative and use your favorite characters as inspiration!

Start by painting an empty cardboard tube or TP roll. While that’s drying, you can get started on the other fun details of your rocket – using just colored card stock, construction paper, a marker & a little glue.

I won’t go into detail for each different rocket, but here’s a quick look at how I made the details for our Buzz rocket:

For our Buzz themed space shuttle wings, we simply cut out triangles from white card stock and used a red marker (with a ruler!) to draw the stripes. Tip: Use card stock for the wings so they will hold up longer!

For the tops of the rockets, I recommend using construction paper, as it’s easier (than card stock) to fold into a cone shape. You can either use craft glue or a glue gun to secure the cones onto the top of the TP roll.

For the flames, we cut out strips of card stock and then glued them to the inside of the TP roll.

And what’s a craft in our house without a (not so hidden) Mickey or two?! We couldn’t resist finishing off our Buzz rockets with aluminum foil Mickey cut outs (made with our new Mickey paper punch)!

The kids & I had a blast (pun intended 😉) creating our Toy Story inspired rockets together. One of my favorite things about this Toy Story craft is that after craft time is over, your kids will have a whole new set of toys to use their imagination with!

We hope you’ll give them a try and bring a little Disney magic into your home this summer! And in the words of our old pal Woody, “Reach for the Sky”, my friends!
