Back to School Safety with First Alert

Thank you First Alert for sponsoring this post. Know CO!

Can you believe that it’s already September?! This summer has flown by in what seems like an instant! And back-to-school season is officially in full swing! If you’re like me, I’m sure you’ve spent weeks preparing for this month. You’ve bought all the school supplies, shopped for all the new clothes, and filled your calendar to the brim with teacher meet & greets and after-school activities. But have you prepared your home for this time of year?

Back-to-school season leads into a very busy time of year for most families. A time that brings many of us out of the house for extended periods of time. Whether its carpooling kids to/from school, traveling for sporting events or getting prepared for the upcoming holiday season. With all of this hustle & bustle, it’s incredibly important to check up on safety inside of our homes – specifically, carbon monoxide safety.

What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon Monoxide (or CO) is known as “the silent killer” since it is an invisible, odorless and deadly gas. It is produced by any fuel-burning device such as a furnace, dryer vent or fireplace. It is the number 1 cause of accidental deaths in the United States today.

How can I protect my home from Carbon Monoxide?

Install a carbon monoxide alarm, like this one from First Alert. CO alarms detect this gas and will then alert you before it is too late. CO alarms should be installed on every level in your home, as well as every bedroom.

What should I do if my CO alarm sounds?

First, immediately leave your home – get outside in the fresh air. Second, call 911.

It’s so important to talk with your children about CO safety at home in addition to fire safety. Be sure to teach them what an alarm sounds like and what to do if it ever sounds – especially if you have older children who may stay home alone. Lastly, always have an evacuation plan in place for emergencies.
