The Teal Pumpkin Project
Life with a child with food allergies can no doubt be tricky – especially this time of year with so many treats everywhere. Luckily, the Teal Pumpkin Project aims to make trick-or-treating fun & safe for everyone, including food allergy families! By displaying a teal pumpkin on your porch & having non-food treats available, you can help to make kids with food allergies feel included this Halloween. Teal pumpkins signal to allergy families that your house is a safe spot to stop!
How can I participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project?
As a food allergy mom, I can promise you it means the world to us when someone displays that little teal pumpkin. Grab a teal pumpkin bucket, like the one pictured above for only $1 at Walmart! Or, if you’re looking for a fun craft to do with your kids, then get creative and turn those orange pumpkins into teal pumpkins! No gesture is too small. Here are just a few ideas of non-food treats that you can include:
- Stickers/Tattoos
- Glow Sticks
- Bubbles
- Bouncy Balls
- Spider Rings
- Mini Coloring/Activity Books
- Fun Headbands
- Pencils + Erasers
- Playdoh
Help spread the word about the Teal Pumpkin Project in your neighborhood by displaying a sign (click here for the free printable) next to your treat bowl/bucket that explains what it is all about!
What about Halloween candy?
While the Teal Pumpkin Project is mostly focused on non-food treats, there are many allergy-safe candies out there that are also great options for (most) kids with food allergies! Candies like Dum Dums, Smarties, Ring Pops, Skittles, Starbursts, Sour Patch Kids & Swedish Fish. Just be sure to keep candy in a separate bowl to avoid any potential cross contamination.
Will YOUR family be participating in the Teal Pumpkin Project this Halloween?

As a mom of an autistic child whose constipation is severely effected by crap sugar and gmos, I can definitely appreciate the value in the teal pumpkin project.

Absolutely. Filled with Skittles. We are a food allergy family as well, all nuts, shellfish, lots of fruits. Ugh. It is so sad at Halloween not being able to trick-or-treat like normal kids. I really feel for her. So happy to see when families recognize this issue with a teal pumpkin.
