LEGO Minifigure Shelf

Happy New Year, friends! I know many of us are feeling motivated to start the new year off with freshly organized homes. The start of a brand new year always has me inspired to tackle home projects, too, and that’s exactly what I’ve been doing these past few weeks. I just finished giving our pantry a major overhaul and let me tell you – it feels amazing to have that project crossed off my list!

Next up, I’m focusing on the kids’ bedrooms. We are actually in the middle of transforming Noah’s room into a Star Wars Galaxy (more on that soon!), but first up is tackling his LEGO area. You may remember the DIY LEGO Table I made for Noah a few years back. Since then his LEGO collection has nearly quadrupled so we’ve had to add more storage along the way, but I’m happy to report it still gets used every.single.day! And with an ever-growing LEGO collection also comes with lots and lots of LEGO Minifigures. So, I thought it would be fun to create a space for him to display his favorites. After a little brainstorming and researching store-bought options (note: there aren’t many), the hubby and I decided to tackle this DIY project together and make our own LEGO Minifigure Shelf.

Read below for the full how-to on this easy 3-step DIY LEGO Minifigure Shelf.

Supplies Needed
  • (2) 1″x2″x8′ boards
  • Table Saw
  • Wood Screws
  • Sand Paper or Sanding Block
  • Paint + Brushes
  • Hanging Hardware
  • Hammer + Nails
  • LEGO Plates (in your desired color/size; we chose gray 2×4 LEGO Plates)
  • Gorilla Glue
How-To
Step 1 – Build

First, start by sketching out your shelf design depending upon how many LEGO Minifigures you are looking to display (see measurements below for approx dimensions of our shelf). If you are looking to hold more than 50 Minifigures you will likely need to buy more wood than what is specified above.

Once you’ve determined the dimensions of your shelf it’s time to get building! Luckily we have a table saw on hand, so my hubby was able to knock out the construction of the shelf in less than an hour! Note: make sure to sand down the edges before assembling with wood screws.

Step 2 – Paint

Next, you’ll likely want to give your shelf a fresh coat of paint (or three)! I knew I wanted a clean & simple look that would compliment Noah’s LEGO Table, so I decided to go with a semi-gloss white paint. Note: It took 3 coats of paint to get the full coverage I was looking for.

Step 3 – Secure LEGO Plates

After your paint has fully dried you can begin to glue on your LEGO Plates. I recommend securing your LEGO plates with a strong adhesive like Gorilla Glue.

Tip: If you’re lucky enough to have a LEGO Store near you, be sure to check out the “Pick & Build Wall” to select your LEGO Plates for your Minifigure Shelf. This will allow you to choose from a wide variety of shapes & colors while also buying in bulk. If you don’t have a LEGO Store nearby, you can also purchase individual bricks/plates online at LEGO.com

Lastly, all that’s left is to attach hanging hardware on the back of your shelf and then hang onto the wall.

What are the measurements of the shelf?

The overall dimensions of our LEGO Minifigure shelf are approx 19.5×25″ – this includes 5 shelves at approx 18″ in length. All of the shelves – with the exception of the very top – are spaced at approx 4″ apart. We decided to leave a bigger gap at the top to allow for taller LEGO figures.

How many LEGO Minifigures can be displayed on the shelf?

We opted to space out our 2×4 LEGO plates so that 10 LEGO Minifigures could be evenly displayed on each shelf for a total of 50 Minifigures.

What was the total cost to build the LEGO Minifigure shelf?

In total, we spent less than $25 to build this shelf!

Noah is absolutely thrilled to have a dedicated space to display his Minifigure collection! And I’m sure it won’t be long before his collection will double in size (again!) and we need to add a second shelf to the wall 😉
